| Water-rate petition nears 29,000 names THE Downing Street website petition to the Prime Minister to instruct water companies to return to charging churches as charities and not as business premises had collected 28,876 signatures by Wednesday, making it the second most popular petition after the petition to let the Red Arrows fly at the 2012 Olympics, and before petitions on Gurkhas and road tax. The petition, started by David Boddy, churchwarden of North Thornaby, Teesside, will now remain open until 6 December. The current billing arrangements for surface-water charges could cost the Church of England an extra £15 million a year. Youth-crime concern THE Children’s Society’s policy director, Kathy Evans, has called the government’s Youth Crime Action Plan “a mixed bag of policies, with some very welcome proposals, but others that raise serious concerns”. Former Archbishop dies THE Rt Revd George Noakes, who was Archbishop of Wales from 1987 to 1991, died on Monday, aged 83. A native of rural Cardiganshire, he served most of his ministry in West Wales, and was Bishop of St Davids for nine years before being appointed Archbishop. He retired in 1991. The current Archbishop, Dr Barry Morgan, said: “He was a respected and greatly esteemed leader. We extend our sympathy to his widow, Jean.” New Warden of Lee Abbey THE next Warden of Lee Abbey, the retreat and holiday centre in north Devon, is to be the Revd David Rowe, Rector of Wilford, Nottingham, who will take up his post in October. He succeeds the Rt Revd Chris Edmonson, the new Bishop of Bolton. |
