A BRITISH woman who grew up in Ethiopia has chronicled her quest to track down African schoolmates, raising money for a water charity in the process.

Annette Allen, who lives in Buckingham, had a nomadic childhood. Her father’s job as an aviation engineer took the family to South Africa and then Ethiopia. Four years ago, armed with just an old school photograph from her time at the Catholic Girls’ School in Addis Ababa in the 1960s, she returned to Africa to find out what had become of her schoolfriends. The result is recounted in An Ethiopian Oddessey.

“Going back was very emotional as it has changed so much. Addis Ababa has grown in population five times, while there are affluent homes right next to shanty towns.”

Among her discoveries was that the father of one of her classmates is now the President of Ethiopia, Girma Wolde-Giorgis, whom Ms Allen met. Another is the granddaughter of Emperor Haile Selassie.

Half the book’s royalties will go towards relief projects in Ethiopia, in partnership with Water Aid.
