A MEMORIAL MASS for a murdered Iraqi priest, Fr Yousif Adel Aboudi, a Chaldean priest from central Baghdad, is to be held by the Syrian Orthodox community in London on Sunday.

The mass, at St Dunstan’s, Friars Place Lane, at 4.30 p.m., is for “the latest on the list of Christian martyrs”, the Metropolitan of the Syrian Orthodox Church, Athanasius Toma Dawodis, said on Tuesday.

Fr Aboudi was killed outside his home in Baghdad six days ago. News agency reports said the priest was shot in a drive-by attack. But a report, described as “accuate” by Canon Andrew White, director of the Foundation for Reconciliation in the Middle East, said that Fr Aboudi was killed last Saturday evening with a silenced gun at the gates of his home near his church in the Karrada neighbourhood, in the presence of his wife.

The report said: “This murder was a warning for others and punishment for disobedience. Fr Yousif runs a Christian school. The insurgents threatened to kill him last week if he did not close the school.”

Another pastor in Baghdad was also reported to have received death threats.
