Ministry? Get A Life!
by Ed Beavan
A NEW course published by the Church of England encourages young people to “listen to God’s voice” for careers advice. Get A Life! will be available at churches across the UK this weekend, to coincide with Vocations Sunday, . The five-session course, aimed at 13- to 18-year-olds, uses biblical passages and a range of activities to help them work out how best to use their gifts to serve God. The course encourages teenagers to consider the meaning of ministry, and gives ideas such as spending an evening without television in an attempt to focus on God’s call; or watching the film Billy Elliot to explore the theme of sacrifice. Another idea is spending half a day shadowing a Christian role-model, to see what different careers involve. A co-author of the course, the Revd Tim Sledge, said that it was an attempt to move away from today’s celebrity-obsessed culture. “We don’t have good Christian role-models: people look at celebrities, and think that’s how they want to be, but don’t see Christian role-models in daily walks of life.” The Church of England has also produced a set of reflective resources based on four devotional images for Vocations Sunday, which are available on its website. The Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales launches its annual vocational campaign this Sunday, encouraging young men to consider the priesthood by distributing 4000 posters among parishes, university chaplaincies and schools. Get A Life! is published by CHP at £8.99 (CT Bookshop £8.10); 978-0-7151-4146-5.To order this book, email the details to Church Times Bookshop (please mention "Church Times Bookshop price") |
